The Truth Behind The Move

Moving to Savannah, GA is not something I regret, and it is not something that I ever will regret. “What brought you, a Chicago girl, all the way down HERE to Savannah?” (A question I get CONSTANTLY) “My boyfriend is stationed here in the military” I reply to them, “Oh, THAT explains it” they snidely remark as they either roll their eyes and laugh, or try to “give me advice” not to get married young because “that is SO typical with military men.”

This is a weekly, sometimes every couple days conversation that people think is actually acceptable to say to me. I have no shame in moving my life down to Savannah to be able to live happily with my man in uniform.

Before my move, during the preparation I actually had a few people who I had before considered “friends” try to get me to second guess my choice; and to my friends who supported me, and continue to 100% are the ones who helped me stay strong, and mean more than they know to me.

With that being said, I will always put a smile on my face and show the world that I am happy, because being with Zach makes me the happiest girl in the universe, however my time out here, alone, is not always sunshine. I’ve never been away from home before, with the exception of weekend getaways. My sister, and my mom are two of my best friends in the entire world, and my life was up in Chicago. I left everything, dropped everything, and quit everything to move my world down to Savannah to start a new chapter of my life. I grew up in a home with five, sometimes six other people always around, making noise, and filling the silent void in the big house. Down here, is new and different. Different in a good way but also frightening. I’ve cried for no reason, gotten angry with Zach for no reason, and called my mom to talk for no reason. I’ve also, however, laughed for no reason, smiled for no reason, and love Zach for ALL of the reasons, and that is when I remember why I came here. Love makes you do crazy things; and in retrospect, I would have never experienced the things I have while out here if I hadn’t taken that risk.

Savannah is a beautiful city in its own way. When I first moved here I remember actually laughing at the fact that Savannah is a “city.” When I think city, I think tall skyscrapers, air pollution, taxis everywhere and loud noises. Savannah is peaceful, full of history and breathtaking. It opened my eyes that things can be different, and that is ok.

Zach leaves for PT every morning at 5:30 AM and for the first few months, he didn’t know this, but I would find it so difficult to fall back asleep after he left and I would lay in bed on my phone wondering how I was going to fill the day with having nothing to do, and knowing no one. I refused to allow myself to get depressed by sulking in my thoughts (because I have a tendency to do that).

Posting on Instagram and tagging the hashtag #SavannahBlogger allowed me to get in touch with some really great, inspiring women who began inviting me to events and dinners and that meant so much. I also began working and met some of the greatest people that I would have never crossed paths with if I hadn’t ever moved out here.

Moving here over the summer also meant that I had to get moving and find a school, get accepted, and register for classes. With time just moving a little too quickly, I ended up taking online classes with my college back in Chicago, until this semester rolled around and I was able to get accepted, and registered to a school in Savannah to continue working towards my bachelors degree.

Basically, a LOT has changed in my life in less than a year, and it has been stressful and the unknown is always terrifying but I’m getting through it; and YOU will get through whatever it is you are going through. Spending all of this time to myself is something that I feel everyone needs to go through, as much as I hate being alone. I have become more in tune with my body, understanding that sometimes when I get too stressed, my chest gets tight and my body tries fighting an anxiety attack. This teaches me to take a break and just breathe. I also am learning that if something is not to your liking, you have to speak up, because no one can read your mind unless you tell them how you feel.

I’m human, and so is everyone else. The decisions that I make are what I want in my life, and I will always stand behind what I believe in. Zach does an amazing job of making me feel at home, and is always there to listen when I’m feeling homesick or have something on my mind. I could never stay this strong being so far away from friends and family without his love and support and that is what truly means the most.

Anyways, I started Jade rolling my face every morning and every night after using my daily moisturizers and toners, and the difference in my skin after simply one WEEK is uncanny. I am a full faced makeup kind of girl, and my skin was SO glowy all week that I didn’t wear makeup a single day. NOT. ONE. DROP. I’m a believer in this, and you should be too. After adding Jade rolling into my skincare routine, I almost look forward to the relaxing, cooling sensation gliding across my face every morning and every night. The results speak for themselves.

Water You Waiting For?


Ladies, are you taking the time to hydrate your skin everyday with your favorite moisturizer and not really noticing a difference? Or are you washing your face everyday, doing what you should, and your skin continues to look dull, and blah?

Answer: YOU MIGHT NOT BE DRINKING ENOUGH WATER!!!

Water is one of my biggest secret weapons when it comes to good skin care, and feeling your best daily. Drinking enough water and staying hydrated to your bodies’ needs is one of the key factors to ensuring a healthy glow from within. Whether or not you have a daily morning routine, I encourage you to sleep with a big cup of water next to you, so when you wake up you have a nice, giant glass to refresh, and wake you up! I also have read, long ago, that it is important in the morning to make sure that you drink room temperature water to regulate your organs inside, and your internal thermostat. This has been proven true for me at least, because if I drink water straight out of a cold fridge in the morning I will have the chills, and be freezing until I finish my cup of coffee!

*Try this!* Every morning try squeezing a half of a lemon into a glass full of water, and add in a tiny pinch of Pink Himalayan salt. This is a natural electrolyte drink that will get your brain going, (from the sodium in the Himalayan salt) and have you feeling hydrated and ready to take on the day; focused.

Throughout the day it can be difficult to stay hydrated while you go on with your routine, which is why I recommend carrying a big, insulated water bottle around everywhere you go that is always full of water so you can stay hydrated!

Your skin will be clearer, more glowing, full of color and you’ll feel more awake! The toxins will all be flushed out of your body and you will feel refreshed and rejuvenated. You can find your daily recommended water intake here!

How to Handle School Stress


So, you’ve started school. Let me tell you a thing, or two, about starting school: it. iS. STRESSFUL!

Who would’ve ever thought that with it being pounded in our heads our entire lives that, “going to school is important,” and “you have to go to school,” that it would be so difficult to carry so many expectations at once. You have to keep good grades, and be active, and have clear skin, and eat right when in reality, no one is perfect! 

When I stress about school, it gets really bad. I get chest pains, and I become super irritable, all because I have so many expectations just piling up, one by one. Thankfully, however, I have found a few things, in a few stressor departments, that I use to keep myself feeling fresh and rejuvenated while going to school, instead of sad and depressed.

First off, we are going to talk about staying organized! 

At the beginning of every class, we ALL know about the dreaded syllabus week. But I say, take this time during syllabus week to set up your semester.

  • Use a PLANNER

    -During this week, with every syllabus you receive, go into the planner with different colored pens, and stickers, and put down the important due dates of every class. Once you have your life for the next few months planned out, you need to look at this planner every. single. day. I want you to physically see for yourself how much time you have for what assignment, and how you can coordinate your time better when you know a due date is coming up.

    • Get some FOLDERS

    -Organize a folder per class. Each class has its own folder, that way you never lose anything, or get papers mixed up between classes.

    • Set TIME aside

    -I know it sucks when friends are going out, or you would rather be headed to get dinner with your significant other, but trust me, the pain in your chest will simply build and build if you put assignments aside for too long and you procrastinate. You’ll feel so much more accomplished with yourself if you do.

    The next topic I want to talk about is EATING HEALTHY!

    Whether you eat at school in the cafe, or you go grocery shopping weekly and eat in your apartment, eating healthy is key to a healthy mind, body, and soul. When you eat better, you feel better. It’s as simple as that.

    • Breakfast

    -Breakfast IS the most important meal of the day because you want to fuel your body to get ready for everything you’re going to encounter in the day. Some of my favorite, quick and easy breakfast options are:

    Yogurt Bowl:


    (I like to use non-dairy yogurt), take a yogurt cup and put it in a bowl. Then add some granola, chia seeds, cinnamon, flax seeds, honey and almond butter and you have a superfood, protein packed, quick meal for the day! (Sometimes I like to add frozen berries!)

    Oatmeal:

    Take a bowl and pour some dry oats into it. Add some almond milk, to the consistency of your liking, add some cinnamon, almond butter, (or peanut butter!), chia/flax seeds, honey, granola, berries, whatever you like! Basically the same toppings as the yogurt bowl, and pop it into the microwave for :45-1:00min and you have some delicious, health-packed oatmeal!

    • Lunch

    -Lunch is always different for me because it will always depend on my day! But here are two of my favorite lunch options that I will always opt for if I am home!

    Avocado Toast:

    Take two pieces of frozen ezekiel bread and pop them into the toaster. While those are getting nice and toasty, cut an avocado in half and remove the pit, then put the insides into a small bowl and mash it up! Add in whatever seasonings you like, (I typically do some himalayan salt, pepper, turmeric, and red pepper flakes) then spread the mixture onto your warm toast! I typically then will add some Sriracha sauce on top to add extra flavor!

    Salad:

    This is simple, chop up some romaine lettuce and top with your favorite veggies! Then dress with your favorite dressing, or some olive oil and vinegar!

    • Dinner

    Dinner can be SO easy as a college student if you be proactive and MEAL PREP!!

    Chicken:

    Every Sunday evening it is key that my boyfriend and I meal prep our chicken, and put it into containers so that throughout the week we can easily heat up the chicken and simply cook a veggie with it! We typically like to sauté some zucchini or brussels sprouts with different seasonings every time to keep it fresh. We also do this with pork, and different kinds of sausages!

    Vegan Chili:

    You guys, this chili is LIFE CHANGING!!!! (and SO easy!) You can find the recipe here: Vegan Chili

    • Snacks

    -Snacks are basically key to keeping you from going insane in between meals, and boring classes! I like to pack things like nuts and dried fruit, a nice, healthy protein bar, cut up celery or carrots, (or whatever your favorite veggie is), and even packing some protein powder into a bottle and drinking a protein shake throughout the day. Keep the snacks protein packed, and healthy to get you through the day without getting you off track.

    Now we are going to talk about skincare in school!

    -If you can give your skin a breather, do it. If I know I am planning a workout and then going to class, I easily know that I am just going to bring some mascara for POST workout, and some of my Mario Badescu Aloe spray to hydrate. I put on some moisturizer and I go on with my day, and I know my skin appreciates it.

    -Stress can cause breakouts, so if you do so happen to get a few here and there, DO NOT POP THEM! As tempting as it is to believe that once you pop them, you’ll have glowing, perfect skin, you are WRONG! It will only spread the pimple, and possibly leave a scar! (We don’t want scars!!)

    -Stay hydrated ladies!! Drink lots of water! Make it your drink of choice! The first thing I do when I wake up is squeeze half of a lemon into a mason jar and then fill that baby to the TOP with water, and drink it all down before I allow myself to have any coffee. Your body will immediately begin to flush out toxins, and when the toxins are out, the clearer your skin will be!

    Some side notes…

    School is SO important, and will be so much more worth it once you get that diploma in your hands, so stick with it and try your best everyday. Get the grades you aspire to have, and make an impression on your teachers; let them know that you WANT to be there, and you value what they are teaching. We will all make it, in the end!
